New Centres!

Hey everyone! I (Ms. K) am so lucky to be taking the reigns in our classroom for the next few weeks. It has been truly inspiring to see the Kinders "sprout" since I arrived here in January. This week has been flying by as it has been very busy, especially with all the new additions we have to our classroom! Check out some of the new centres we have engaged with this week:

Capacity Bean Table: By scooping and pouring beans, the Kinders have an opportunity to explore capacity! Their challenge is to find the container that holds the most beans.

CVC Word Writing (with  QR codes to check!): This tabletop center allows the Kinders to gain some confidence in writing. Their challenge is to identify the picture on the card, then sound it out, followed by writing down the sounds they hear! When they are finished writing, they can scan the QR code that is printed on the back to check if they were right.

This center works on:
  • Reading pictures
  • Writing strategies
  • Confidence building

New Books in the Listening Center: Kinders are invited to cozy up with a book and iPad to listen to some of our new books we have in our reading corner. Some of the new books include: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, Sometimes I Feel like a Fox by Danielle Daniel, Families are Different by Nina Pelligreni, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, Rosie Revere, and Engineer by Andra Beaty. A student in the AM class so kindly donated The Feel Good Book by Todd Parr so I created a QR code and that is now available for reading as well!

This center works on:
  • Listening skills
  • Reading skills
  • Comprehension skills

Secret Sight Words: At this center, the Kinders have the opportunity to experience writing magic! Kinders will grab a buddy, write either a sight word from the pebble bowl or a word from the book If Rocks Could Sing by Leslie McGuirk with white crayon. Once they have it written, they hand it to their partner to make the magic happen. Their partner will shade over their secret word with marker to reveal the word.

Building a House for the 3 Little Pigs: At this center, the students are challenged to build a house that is strong and sturdy enough for the 3 Little Pigs to live in. The Kinders are given materials such as sticks, straw, “bricks” and playdough to create their houses. They can choose whether they want to build with a single material or a combination of them all. Once they are done creating their house, they can test if their house will withstand the strong wind of the Big Bad Wolf by turning on a fan!

It has been a very inspiration experience to watch this Kinder burst out of her shell and teach her friends how to do something that she is truly passionate about.
